Where am I?

Happy Chinese New Year!
Depending on which astrologer you listen to, this year is supposed to be an excellent year for people under my chinese horoscope (that includes me of course!). I'm not a firm believer in horoscope and stuff, but, hey, if they say it's gonna be a good year for me, why should I argue with them?
Anyway, a long time ago, I posted a link to a rather amusing project, basically a tribute to those whose geography is not their forte. But first, a quick history lesson. The Chinese city of Guangzhou used to be romanised to Canton. So if a tourist asks me today where is 'Canton'. I would have directed him to Guangzhou, whilst betting that he is using an outdated tourist guide book.
Or is he?
I randomly came across this the other day - there is a city in Ohio named Canton too! Even more interestingly, it *is* named after Guangzhou. So the fool's world map doesn't look so foolish afterall. Anyone fancy finding a village called 'Siberia' somewhere along the equator?

Wake up and go!
Posted @ 16:03
Ok, this time adjustment thing is getting quite messy I must admit. I was mainly involved in 'recharging' over the last couple of weekends, which left me with little time for other things. Overall January has been very busy and eventful, but this leaves me rather disorganised during my spare time. This is, of course, something that I plan to improve on in due course.
Meanwhile, getting up ultra early in the cold is not particularly appealing. In fact, even if one has had enough rest, the sheer thought of venturing out of one's bed is enough to put people back to sleep. The other day, I read in the newspaper showcasing a new walking alarm clock. This particular clock will start to crawl around the house once the alarm goes off. Not only does one wakes up completely by the time he manages to catch the crawling siren, he will also have benefited from some morning exercises.
I couldn't find this particular alarm clock on the net, so I'll have to link you to an alternative. This particular model rises towards the ceiling as it goes through snoozes.
My only question is... what if you live somewhere with a really high ceiling? Go and buy yourself a ladder too? Also, I find the crawling one funkier too, I better start searching for a link, shouldn't I?

Cool animation, cool advert...
Posted @ 16:09
I reckon most Flash animation fans must have seen the work by XiaoXiao, who have made a series of stickman fighting animations. There are/were lots of stickman fighting animations in cyberspace, but few can match XiaoXiao's quality (in my opinion). I quite like No. 5 in the series, but No. 3 was probably his best known piece of work, which could be described quite simply as 'cool'.
Meanwhile, I have been on the rare hunt for a new mobile phone. I have been using my previous one since the summer of 2003. When it comes to phones, I am not a function freak - I only ever use my phone to make calls and to send text messages. Camera, video, internet, MMS, etc are simply not my cup of tea... well not via a mobile phone anyway. However, mobile phones which only have basic functions *AND* looks good/cool are practically non-existent thesedays.
Anyway, back to the phone hunt. The Motorola V8 and V9 have been catching my attention lately, especially after watching the TV advert. Whilst I was searching for more information, I found various versions of the V9 advert posted on its website. To my surprise, I found a version created by XiaoXiao! Now, Motorola is doing a campaign where users can submit their own advert based on the supplied script, so I'm not sure whether XiaoXiao's was an official or a submitted version. Click 'The Directors' tab to find XiaoXiao's advert.
Incidentally, you should also watch the version made by Tarsem, which is the version I saw on TV, and it is definitely one cool advert.

Literally binning files...
Posted @ 16:03
This week is binning week - I am trying to get rid of the piles of junk in my room. Actually, some of them are not really junk at all - useful stuff that are in good conditions - it's just that I don't need them any more. I have a feeling it's going to be harvest time for the local charity shop, which is literally a minute's walk from where I live.
More on the theme of binning stuff - last week I had an 'urgent MSN conversation', which involved suggesting ways to undelete files from a USB stick. The files that were deleted were not moved to the recycle bin, instead they just 'disappeared' forever. After some fiddling around with file recovery programs, I began to suspect that the files were not deleted after all...
If only she has one of these:
Yes, a hard disc literally in the shape of a recycle bin! As well as acting as a conventional external hard disc, everytime a file is deleted, it will place a copy into the device. One may wish to question the point of this, as normally if you delete files, it will be moved to the Windows recycle bin anyway. However, one cannot question the 'cool' fact that blue LEDs on the device itself will light up as the bin gets filled up with files. Also, judging from the screenshots, you don't even need to connect the device via a USB cable.
The only snag is that it is still a conceptual product...

Facebook me!
Posted @ 23:13
Ok, quick poll here... how many of you out there have signed up to at least one social network such as Friendster, Facebook or MySpace? I guess the answer is a big *yes*. There are few things that appear to have universal appeal, regardless of one's background. Football/Soccer is probably one, and a certain brand of cola drink is probably another. It seems that virtual social network is fast becoming another candidate. So just what is so special about these websites that makes them irresistible to the mass audience? The BBC ran several features and articles on social networks, and one of the latest findings is reported here. I'm not going to dwell on the deeper social impacts of these networks today, anyway I bet you can find plenty of articles floating around.
I have signed up to a couple of these networks, but nowadays I 'concentrate' on Facebook. The main reason is that most of the people I have listed in my other network websites are also on Facebook, plus many others who only use Facebook. Whilst I know of people who are logged onto Facebook practically permanently, who would check his/her Facebook 'Wall' or 'Inbox' far more often than his/her (work related) email accounts. Recently, the developers have allowed the opportunities for users to write custom modules and share it with everyone else. Personally I find these quite distracting, and I have only installed a couple of these modules (as opposed to some who install just about everything). Interestingly, I find Facebook to be a surprisingly efficient way to re-establish contact with the people - in some cases I haven't spoken to them properly for years! So I guess these social networks do have some positive side effects.
hmm... hang on...
Ok, Ok, I confess... this is the *REAL* reason why people sign up to social network websites. Now, get back to Facebook... er I mean work... er... Facebook... er... whatever!

Chunky Olympics...
Posted @ 00:03
The official logo for the London 2012 Olympics has been released. My first impression was: er... what the!? This is possibly the most unusual Olympic logo design. Compare this with the bidding logo. Personally, I found the coloured ribbons (representing the River Thames) meandering through bold black type give a rather 'conservative' feel. When it comes to the actual logo, they have gone for the other extreme, and picked something that is rather bold, and perhaps even retro (which seems to be fashionable thesedays). The colours are too sharp and solid for my liking though.
Funnily enough, the more I look at the new logo, the more I seem to like it. It is starting to give me that energetic vibe, which I presume was part of the philosophy behind the design. I am even starting to imagine how things would look when the logos are plastered all over London during the games. As far as a brand is concerned, this definitely does the job, although whether this will work for the Olympics remains to be seen. The video, however, hmm... not too impressed...

All for a beer...
Posted @ 20:33
[Disclaimer: can be offensive to some (e.g. myself), please do NOT continue reading unless equipped with a *big* dose of sarcasm!]
It is the beer festival this week, with an interesting theme based on the concept of 'spy'. Why spy, one might wonder? Apparently, if one takes away the '2' in the year '2007', one is left with '007' - get the idea? To compliment the theme, there are also many beverages named using James Bond puns. 'Interesting' is how I would describe these puns, and my personal 'favourite' (although not spy-theme related) is 'I can't believe it's not bitter'...
Hmm.....
Anyway, moving swiftly on. As people who know me, I always have a problem with age identification. It seems that nobody in the world of pubs and clubs would believe that I am (way) over 21. So, when we went yesterday, all my (younger) friends got in without any problems, and I got ID-ed yet again. Fair enough, I got used to it. However, some %£#@$ came up with a brilliant idea: let's give all those people who got ID-ed a wristband! Yes, it *could* have been a great idea, but I was told that I might get ID-ed again inside even with the wristband. Eh? What's the point of giving us wristbands then?
Grr.....
Now, speak of the wristband, or shall I say, 'wristband'? Instead of getting some proper wristband people give out during events (and the potential for sponsors logos printed on them), they have gone for the stylish CABLE TIES?!?!! Admittedly, they did try to make it less humiliating by making the wristband out of three cable ties of different colours, but still, these are cable ties! Surely this is against human rights? hehehe...
To round off this post, how about some magic tricks with cable ties?

Button up!

Jeans, denim, dungarees... however you want to call it - whether it is purely for fashion or for convenience, most of us own at least one pair at some stage. Back in days when it was first invented, people were wearing them for labour work, due to the fabric's ability to resist wear and tear. Meanwhile, on a different note, here are some information on the invention of the zip. You will notice that they were invented at around the same time, although the modern version of the zip was not patented until early 20th Century. Anyway, why am I talking about these two things together? Well, presumably, when Mr Levi first started selling his jeans, zips were not widely available then, so buttons would be used instead to fasten various bits of fabrics. Now, fast forward more than 100 years, why are they still selling jeans fastened with buttons, as if it were some kind of fashion desire?
(Erm... actually, I think that *IS* the whole point of using buttons rather than the zip...)
Button fastened trousers is probably one of the more inconvenient pieces of garment, well for guys at least! So why do they still do them? Now, I think you should all realise by now that a certain *someone* (aka me) was having great difficulties recently buying a pair of jeans that fits him and was not fastened with buttons.
Ok, this post is in fact a rant... hehe

Realistically futuristic
Posted @ 15:50
I've seen films or cartoons with a futuristic theme where people have some rather cool accessories. In the real world, how about a sunglasses-mp3 combo? It might not have a hidden missile launcher or a holographic data projection system like one sees in some of the films, but it still looks rather funky. I wanted one of those too, except I use neither portable music players nor sunglasses. Oh well.....

Cosplay = costume + play
That's what you're doing if you are dressing up as your favourite anime/manga/video game character. Perhaps ok for a fancy dress party, but some people do take this a little bit... er... too seriously. As many of these characters come with traits that do not obey the laws of physics as we know it, imitating them can be a bit problematic. Take armour as an example. You see characters wearing several tonnes of armour, and yet they move as if they are as light as a feather.
Another problem is hair. With hair dyes coming in all sorts of hues and shades thesedays we're not too worried about colours. However, how can you replicate the hair that spikes a foot high, or fringes that are shaped like lightning bolts? Well, the most conventional method is to use a wig, or even a plastic mold.
Well, seeing this as a... er... great marketing opportunity, why not come up with styling products that let you achieve the impossible? I dunno about you, but I'm not brave enough to stroll along the streets looking like that! Hmm.....

Thou shalt go bankrupt!
Posted @ 16:52
If a particular receipe is making money, why not squeeze more out of the punters by changing the things ever so slightly, and pretend to be something completely new? For some reason, many people seem to accept this idea, including myself every now and then.
What do I mean? Take music singles as an example. There was a time when singers or pop groups (in particular the *manufactured* variety) seem to be happy to churn out cover versions of old classics, rather than doing their own music. Other examples include computer/console games - a 'new' version of the same game is often planned when a new gaming platform is being developed, or re-releasing games with 'extra graphics' or 'extra background music' (more common in the old days during the floppy/CD-ROM transition period). Another successful strategy is to release 'Xth anniversary edition', or 'limitied edition'. This is notorious in the beat 'em up genre, including my favourite, Street Fighter II.
Nowadays classic board games repeatedly reinvent themselves with new editions. Monopoly is a prime example - you get international/regional editions as well as themed versions related to sports or movies. However, the fact that Monopoly has been around for 70 years inevitably means that some aspects of the game is now severely outdated. Guess what the company behind Monopoly decided to do? Yes, you've guessed it - a 70th Anniversary Edition! They have updated the game in several aspects, most notably prices are now brought to the 21st century levels. Other changes include new landmarks, and new game pieces.
Speaking of updating Monopoly, one of the selling points in the regional sets is that the game should reflect the local community depicted. However, I've played the Cambridge set and, to be honest, I was rather disappointed. Yes, I got the relevant landmarks, but that's about it. It would be nice if they can go further in their 'regional touch'. For example, a couple of 'scholarship worth $500' or 'Got drunk in student bar and then got arrested' cards would make a lot of differences.
Oh well, I guess having so many editions of the same thing means that you can start a collection. A nice change from coins or stamps perhaps. However, if you are not careful (or the manufacturers keep releasing 'new editions'), you could really spend a fortune on these kind of things.....

hey do you know you can play monopoly live? Erm...not actually playing it but you get to buy properties n build hotels/houses, then wait for 24hours to know the result. Idiotic i know, but very eyecatching playboard ^.^ http://www.monopolylive.com/login.html

And speaking of stylish computer stuff, how about a transparent scanner? Again, I wouldn't mind having one of those. Hehehe...

Live tennis... sort of
Posted @ 13:31
For those of you who don't have access to TV channels that broadcast live tennis, your best alternative used to be the live scoreboard from the event's website. This year, the French Open has rolled out a new toy called stroke tracker, which lets you replay every point stroke by stroke. Ok, it's only (3D) schematics, but at least you will be able to see which points were cheap points and which were great rallies.
Maybe in a few years' time, we can even get 3D renderings of the players too!

Great Day!
Posted @ 10:20
Well, people are debating whether today should be made a public holiday. I guess if the people of Scotland, Ireland and Wales celebrate their patron Saints' Days, then in England people should also celebrate today. Anyway, an extra day of holiday, why not?
Interestingly, today is also probably Shakespeare's birthday.
Today is such a great day to have a birthday I reckon... haha!

Grads are the 'foundation' of knowledge...
Posted @ 08:48
Haha, so funny - check out today's PhD Comics! So I guess putting grad students in the basement can be seen as a symbolic move to represent the roots of all advancement in knowledge. Afterall, most university departments get their $$$ through research - and who does the staff rely on to get the results? Grad students!
Obviously, that interpretation is highly naive. The truth is, grad students get the worst space in a department. Why put a professor in a basement when you can squeeze about twenty into the same space? On well...
Wait a second..... I work in a basement office too!??!?

Actually, I couldn't get to the page by clicking on their link. Instead, on the menu on the left, select "Specials and Offers", and then "Fun and competitions". Then you should be able to see "Your personal world map".

OTT with mint...
Posted @ 23:08
Lack of sleep is the agenda for this week...
Nowadays, coffee wakes me up (better than my alarm clock anyway), but it doesn't keep me alert, which is what I needed most. Instead I find that I'm increasingly relying on the *refreshing* effect of mint. I've been using mint shampoo and conditioner for some time now, but I've just added a methol face wash in a desperate attempt to sustain any kind of facial expression in the morning. Have I gone OTT with this whole mint thing?

Cooking for engineers...
Posted @ 15:08
Cooking is a work of art, or is it science? Personally I don't mind doing a bit of cooking (when I actually leave work on time), but as you may have gathered by now, despite what I do for a living, my brain prefers graphics over equations. I guess I'm a blend of the extremes when it comes to arts vs science - actually, come to think of it, I'm a blend of the extremes for most things!
Anyway, want to think about cooking from an engineering point of view? Look no further than Cooking for Engineers. It gives you various recipes plus a lot of other information on cooking, including some *scientific* investigations. It won an award for the best blog on food, so it can't be bad.....

I must say, if you do not know me, my blog *is* boring. However, once you get to know me, the contents and (especially) the tone do come to life (I hope). I've read random blogs that are more dramatic than the script of a soap. They write so much that I feel like I've known them for years!?! Well, actually, according to *friendster*, some of these people are apparently only a couple of links away...
Anyway, the main reason for the lack of links recently is because my *sources* have been quite slack in supplying them! The only thing I can offer for now is the time.
Speaking of time, I think I am living in the wrong time zone at the moment. Going to bed after 3am three out of the last five nights, and actually getting more things done after 9pm than before. I admit it, I am nocturnal.....
(NB - the Blogger built in spell checker actually says "blog" and "Blogger" are wrong!)

Figure of 8...

Here's an interesting word for you - analemma. Know what it means? Before you even get your creative brain cells going, I better tell you. Actually, let these photos do the speaking. Personally I wouldn't say they are "pretty" pictures, but nevertheless they are rather impressive.....

Apparently you are all supposed to be scared of me according to these people. Well, I'm not too sure about that. (Anyway, a little advertisment in case you visit this page directly - the result of the test is posted in the "about" page of my website...)

'Foam & Fabric' companion...
Posted @ 14:17
A couple of months ago, there was an article on the BBC news website about the boyfriend pillow. Well, the Japanese, always on the look out for new marketing opportunities, naturally developed the next version of the "relaxation accessory" - the girlfriend pillow. Hmm.....

Serious toilet issues...
Posted @ 21:32
I think we are running out of ideas for conferences here - who would have thought that last week was the 4th World Toilet Summit (yes, this is the fourth one...)? What, you've missed it?!! How could you? Well, no worries, there's always the World Toilet Expo 2005. I do wonder how many people would mistaken exhibits for public washrooms.....

Astonishingly, er, clean...

This household cleaning product claims to be "truly astonishing", well, it is *truly astonishing*! However, I bet most casual reader of this ad, when it was first printed, wouldn't even notice the blunder...
Speaking of ads, how about this one? Warning: Whilst no visual part of the video needs *censoring*, some of the languages are a bit... er... adult, so be warned before clicking on the link!

From the makers of PHD comics...
Posted @ 09:23
A new comic strip from the PhD comics team here... Dunno how good this is yet as it is only third strip, but if the same sort of humour as PhD comics is applied here, then I think we are onto a winner.
